Curriculum
The Orchard Day Nursery and Pre-School is committed to delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum through child-centred, play based learning with creative approaches to its delivery at the heart.
The Department for Education and Skills provides the statutory framework within which we work and offers guidance for all Early Years practitioners and settings on the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage relating to Learning, Development and Welfare of children from birth to 5 years. It adheres thoroughly to the Every Child Matters agenda and underpins all the teaching and learning here at The Orchard Day Nursery and Pre-School.
The principles of which guide the work of our early years practitioners are grouped into four themes:
- A Unique child - every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured.
- Positive Relationships - children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.
- Enabling Environments - the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.
- Learning and Development - children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas if Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.
There are 6 areas covered by the early leaning goals and educational programmes and it is these which guide our activity planning.
We develop activities which allow us to observe, monitor and guide children in their development keeping in mind the following areas:
- Personal, Social, Emotional Development;
- Communication, Language and Literacy;
- Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy;
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
- Physical Development;
- Creative Development.
None of these areas of Leaning and Development can be delivered in isolation from the others. They are equally important and depend on each other to support a rounded approach to child development. We deliver them through carefully planned, purposeful play with a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities.
